What Is Rake?
Any new entrant to the world of online poker needs to be aware of both rake and rakeback.
Rake is the percentage or commission a poker room (full tilt, pokerstars etc) takes from every pot in a real money cash game. In essence, it is the way these sites make their money. The beauty of this system for the poker sites is that it is risk free as no matter who wins the pot, they will take their cut. The main thing that governs a poker site's profitability is the number of players sitting at its table.
Rake is also contributed in tournaments / Sit and Gos, just in a different way. Whenever you play an online tournament / SnG the fee is always attached to the buy in (e.g. $5 + $0.50 / $10 + $1 etc)
On most poker sites the amount they are able to take is capped at about $3 on the cash tables but the really big tournaments online come with pretty pricy fees attached ($200 + $16) but the percentage comes down the higher the entry fee.
